Social Science, Human Service, Law & Philosophy:

Chemical Dependency Professional:  Chemical dependency professionals counsel people experiencing substance abuse. They help people identify behaviors and problems related to their addictions. They also work with family members who are affected by the addiction and hold counseling sessions individually or in a group setting. Transfers to Highline College Youth Development BAS Degree

 

Criminal Justice: Highline’s program prepares you to work right after graduation in a wide variety of professions in the criminal justice field.  Examples are Correction officers, police officers and detectives, security guards, park rangers and ecology investigators. Human Services:  Employees in this field provide services that help improve someone’s quality of life.  You will learn to support and empower children, youth, adults, families, and communities.  Human service professionals can hold a wide variety of job titles including Human Service Workers, Case Management aides, Social Work Assistants, Community Support Workers, Mental Health Aides, Community Outreach Workers, and Life Skills Counselors. Paralegal: Paralegals work under the supervision of lawyers and help attorneys with legal services. They may conduct client interviews, research legal issues, locate and interview witnesses, assist at a trial and maintain client contact. However, paralegals do not give legal advice.  Most paralegals work at law firms, corporate legal departments, government offices and offices that represent low income or underprivileged populations. Digital forensics and Investigations:  Data recovery/forensics specialists recover lost or corrupt data from hard drives and other storage media and use forensic techniques to find the reason for the data loss. They may also monitor networks for security breaches, respond to cyber- attacks and gather evidence for use in investigations or prosecuting cyber-crimes. Information Systems Project Coordinator: Information Systems Project Coordinator program prepares you for an entry level position as a supervisory/project manager in the I.T. field. Project Coordinators provide day-to-day administration of projects and ensure that the service or products are delivered in a timely, cost effective and qualitative manner. You should currently be working in or have supervisory/managerial skills gained in a commercial environment. The program will equip you with the tools and skills required in becoming a proficient Project Coordinator of I.T. projects.  Students can specialize in the following areas: Computer Forensics, E-Commerce, Computer Networking, and Software Development.

Mobile Technology Expert

Building mobile apps, architecting mobile strategies, and securing those devices are the top concerns facing the enterprises today. This degree will provide students the skill sets needed from development, Security, as well as hardware support.  Jobs will include Wireless Technical Support as well as other devices in the workforce.

 

Network Security Engineer:  Network specialists and network administrators plan, install and maintain a company’s or organization’s computer system. They also help network users when problems arise. They are responsible for local-area networks (LAN), wide-area networks (WAN) and Internet, intranet and other communications systems. Online Marketing & Social Media Architect: This program will equip students to be exposed to creating good quality content and utilizing effective online marketing strategies - SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and social media. In order to carry out these tasks students should be knowledgeable in numerous technical aspects of web development, coupled with good content creation skills and business principles. Jobs with these skillsets will fall into social media strategist" and "social media manager", and "internet marketing"

 

Technical Communication This program will equip students to be exposed to creating good quality content needed by the likes of /for technical staff as well as end users. Numerous job areas with such skill set would be technical documentation, specifications writer, user documentation, marketing and sales literature, learning and training materials, and technical editor. In order to carry out these tasks students should be knowledgeable in numerous technical aspects of I.T.  technical tools coupled with communication and writing skills. Jobs with these skillsets will fall under Technical Author, Technical Writer.

 

Web Design: This program will equip students to be exposed to creating good quality front-end website designs and integration into backend code. In order to carry out these tasks students should be knowledgeable in the design aspects and be able to use numerous tools ranging from wire framing through graphic design when designing front-end websites.  In addition, they should have some exposure and be able to identify and integrate designs into server side scripting as well as client side scripting code.

 

Web/Database Developer:  Web/Database Developers design and build secure, professional data-driven websites.   Data-driven websites interact with databases.  For example, when you check your grades online or order a product through an e-commerce site, you are interacting with a data-driven website.   Students learn current tools and technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and SQL. Education and Library Services:

Early Childhood Education: Early childhood educators educate and care for children under the age of eight. They teach a variety of academics in a way that young children can understand. Preschool teachers work in public and private schools, childcare centers, charitable organizations, and with parents in homes. Many work the traditional nine-month school year, but some work the full year. Early childhood educators are knowledgeable of child development and very sensitive to the cultures represented by the families in their care. Paraeducator: Paraeducators assist teachers in giving personalized attention to students who need some extra help with class lessons.  They typically work with students one-on-one or in small groups.  They may also grade tests and assignment and check homework.  Paraeducators also provide support for students with special needs.  They mostly work in schools, but may also work in preschools, childcare centers and community centers. Art, Design, Communication and Languages:

Drafting Design: Channel your creativity, as well as your mathematical, science and engineering skills into a career as a drafter.  Drafters use industry standard drafting software to create technical drawings that show how to build products and structures. The drawings feature technical details such as dimensions, materials and procedures, which are used to build manufactured products and residential and commercial buildings.

 

Interior Design: Interior designers plan the look of interior spaces in commercial and residential buildings and structures.  They work with clients to find the right use of colors, textures, furniture, lighting and space that will meet the needs of the building’s occupants.

 

Multimedia Design: This program creates multimedia designers with the skills to deliver comprehensive digital video, web design, digital photography, and graphic design to clients and employers. Students will learn to produce high definition video and motion graphics, shoot visually compelling digital photography and create websites using industry standard software designed for viewing on everything from mobile devices to cinema screens. The program will teach entrepreneurial skills, client relationship and professional management.

 

Visual Communications:  People who work in visual communications, typically graphic designers and Web designers, try to find the most effective way to get messages across in print, media and on the Web.  They create the layout and look of print publications, Webpages, multimedia projects, and marketing materials using colors, type, illustrations, photos and other visual elements for each piece.

 

 

Heath & Wellness Programs:

Direct Care Specialization: Healthcare professionals work in a variety of medical and human services agencies.  They are competent in caregiving, nursing assisting, and adult family home credentialing.  They consistently apply knowledge of appropriate care for vulnerable populations including a general knowledge of fitness, nutrition, social and emotional development, and health and medical support.

 

Global and Public Health, Specialization, Community Health & Wellness:  Patient advocacy and helping patients navigate the increasingly challenging healthcare system are at the heart of this degree. Patient Advocate, Specialization, Community Health & Wellness:  Patient advocacy and helping patients navigate the increasingly challenging healthcare system are at the heart of this degree. If you are most interested in helping people and helping patients access the resources they need to get the best healthcare, this degree is for you.

 

Medical Assisting:  Medical assistants help keep health care facilities and offices running smoothly by performing many administrative and clinical duties.  They update and file patients’ medical records and fill out insurance information, as well as arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services.  They prepare patients by taking medical histories and recording vital signs, and sometimes assisting doctors during exams.

 

Personal Fitness Trainer:  Personal fitness trainers work one-on-one with clients or in small group settings and can work at health and fitness clubs, the YMCA, recreational centers and resorts.  They help clients set and reach fitness goals.      

  

Business:

Accounting: Accounting clerks maintain financial records for businesses and organizations.  They make many calculations every day, increasingly utilizing computers to calculate and record data.  They need to have good communication skills, a strong aptitude for numbers, comfortable working with computers, and detail-oriented. Administrative Management:  Administrative managers plan work and supervise staff to make sure that offices run efficiently and smoothly.  They must know the strengths and weaknesses of each staff member to assign work and to ensure that projects remain on schedule and meet the company’s standards.  They also act as a liaison between staff and management.

Business: Business professionals can work in an array of industries in various roles, including management trainee, manager, marketing representative, or analyst.  Specific job duties vary by role, but can include supervision of staff, implementation of new company procedures, or promotion of company products and services. Business Management and Support:  Effectively manage and supervise people and projects in the office workplace. Utilizing office technology and critical thinking skills to address and support business needs. Represent the organization with professional written and oral communication skills.

 

E-Commerce:  Employees in e-commerce help develop strategies for companies and organizations to successfully do some or all, of their business online.  E-commerce professionals work in a variety of fields and roles, including as e-commerce analysts, program managers, project coordinators and retail coordinators. Hospitality and Tourism Management:  Hospitality and tourism managers work to make guests satisfied with the lodging, travel, and recreational accommodations.    Regarding hotel operations, they manage front office, daily restaurant and catering operations, housekeeping, accounting, publicity, sales, security and maintenance.   They also are employed in a variety of roles, which might include event/meeting conference planner, passenger booking agent, passenger service agent, recreation/spa manager, ticket agent, or casino manager. 

 

International Business and Trade:  This program teaches you how to apply trade and logistics procedures and processes within companies that specialize in cargo transportation and import/export services.  Specific roles can vary depending on the position, but international business and trade professionals may help with strategic business planning, merchandise tracking, financial management, and sales and business development. Small Business / Entrepreneurship: A small business entrepreneur organizes and assumes the risk for a business venture.  They can effectively manage all aspects of a small business including marketing, retailing, and accounting.  People in this field may also work as supervisors or office managers.

 

Retail Management:  Retail managers monitor and oversee the sales environment and work of employees, such as retail salespeople, customer service representatives, stock clerks, sales engineers and wholesale representatives.  They make certain that customers get the best goods and service by handling customer questions and complaints.  They also are in charge of interviewing, hiring, and training new employees.
